News from Nance
A pastor’s wife called me to tell me a story…
A little boy, about 7, greeted her Sunday morning saying, “I learned my first Bible verse!” When she asked what it was, he enthusiastically said, “Genesis 1:1”, then quoted it perfectly: “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” He had, the previous day, attended a CEFMV party club where that verse was taught.
The pastor’s wife had called to tell me what a good job the teachers did and how she really appreciated how they taught the verse.
We have a method for teaching verses:
I: Introduce the verse (Get them interested)
P: Present the verse (Read it from the Bible and from the visual)
E: Explain the verse (Phrase by phrase; define hard words)
A: Apply the verse (What does it mean to the saved and unsaved child?)
R: Repeat the verse ~ Total of 9 times (Make it fun; they won’t know they are learning)
The kids are so proud when they “surprise” you that they can say it without looking.
Rachel’s Report
Summer is here! We arrived home from Christian Youth in Action® (CYIA™) a few days ago. This year, we had 31 students from eight different chapters within CEF of Ohio. In Ohio, CYIA is split up into 3 different tracks: Senior Teacher, Senior Missionary Assistant (SMA), and Junior Support. The Senior class (ages 15 and up) learns all major aspects of a 5-Day Club®: evangelistic Bible lessons, memory verses, and missionary stories. The SMA class learns how to assist the senior missionary through teaching missionary stories and memory verses. The Junior Support class learns how to participate in and support the 5-Day Club through teaching the Word Up (theme for the day), the prayer time, the missions project, and the review game. This year, I worked with the Senior class as a coach/evaluator, which means I helped students prepare to teach, listened to them teach memory verses and Bible lessons, filled out evaluation forms, and gave them feedback. I also taught a class for all the students about how to teach missions in 5-Day Club. It’s been surreal to realize that this is my 8th summer doing 5-Day Club; the aphorism “the days are long, but the years are short” feels very true.
In June, we’ll be in Wilmington, Xenia, Englewood, Eaton, and Yellow Springs for 5-Day Club. One of the elements of 5-Day Club is a missionary story. This year, the story shares the life and coming to salvation of a boy in India named Ringu. While Ringu and his family are fictitious, the story is based on real events in the villages and the missionary in the story, Mr. Grubbs, truly served in India among the Korku people. It has really impacted me to see how much Ringu and his family lived in fear of evil spirits and how Ringu came to trust in Jesus. Praise God that He is greater than any evil spirit, so the believer in Christ doesn’t need to fear.
